Treasures in Heaven

Dear God,

Please give me a passion for the unseen, eternal rewards that You offer. Make me indifferent to the temporary treasures of this world.

Treasures on the earth can't compare with the treasures in heaven.

Molino Dam | Prinza Water Dam

This is yet another part of my journey with my kiddos in exploring the historical side of Las Piñas City. Just the other day, we decided to push through with our plans in visiting the infamous Molino Dam also known as the Prinza Water Dam.

I was crossing this river since 1997 not knowing that this as well plays an important part in our history just like the Zapote Battle Bridge. I was telling my kiddos that this river where you could walk through it and make you reach Cavite in the best fastest route that I know. This is the only route that would make you traveled to Cavite for like a minute or two from Las Piñas and the way it is very easy. fast and swift- as in No Sweat at all.

Shot taken from Las Piñas side fronting Cavite

During summer, the pathway is visible where the "Tagahatid" is nowhere to be found. You could run or simply walked through it with ease. While during the rainy season the water reaches and or covered the pathway and the Tagahatid is there to assist everyone who will be crossing the river of course with a fee. Just recently, renovations have been made and indeed made me impressed. It gives life to the dying river and several posts with tidbits of information educate those passers-by. So, as I told my kiddos this river a.k.a boundary that I know before is not just a river- it is another part of our history that plays an important role in the lives of the Filipinos way back then.

Let me share some of the excerpts of writings about this dam below;

Molino Dam
The Molino Dam is a man-made irrigation dam - its walls made out of adobe (height ranging from 25-30 stacks) and some parts of the flooring made out of cobblestones. Series of buttresses support its perimeter walls. Also, the growth of vegetation flourished because of the natural composition of the building materials. Balete trees and bamboo grasses were within the site. They contributed to the enhanced structural integrity of the dam.

Molino Dam | Prinza Water Dam
The Molino Dam or Prinza Water Dam is a gravity dam on the Zapote River located on the border between Barangay San Nicolas, Bacoor, Cavite, and Barangay Talon Dos, Las Piñas, Metro Manila, Philippines. It was built by hand in the 18th century to irrigate the surrounding rice field in Las Piñas and Bacoor.

Sharing some pictures that I took while revisiting this place. You could visit my entire photo album at this link- Molino Dam | Prinza Water Dam

See those adobe rock used to form the dam?

It actually made me wonder why the water is full of bubbles

Tulay Ng Pinag-Labanan 1897

Tulay Ng Pinag-Labanan also known as Battle of Zapote Bridge (1897)

This is still in connection of the promised that I made with my self to expose my kiddos in the rich history of our country. We start off in visiting the infamous Bamboo Organ Church and now the other place that serves an important role in the battle of Spanish-Filipino during 1897. I include links that you could check for the said article about the Battle happened 120 years ago.

This bridge as well serves as boundary between Cavite and Las Piñas. During highschool days, we have classmates who lived in Bacoor, Cavite(few steps away from this bridge) will need to cross the bridge just to make a phone call to ask/validate/confirms instruction about our home work. Since calls made from the other side is already considered a long distance with a hefty amount due in every minute consumed over the phone. Funny isn't it?

I used to passed by this little bridge way back then not knowing the very importance of this to our countrymen of long ago. I learned from history books that bridges are the gap fillers from one town to another. It is indeed very important as this is the fastest way of delivering communication to other far away towns and barangays. This also serves as a means of route for traders in delivering their goods of livestock, herbs & spices, jewelries, clothing and anything needed for daily use.

While walking going in this place I started to story-tell how important and crucial to have this little bridge in the lives of Filipinos way back then to my kiddos. And of course, the story behind of this bridge is not just a simple story- It is more than just a story, it is history with the life and blood, the sacrifices, lives that has lost during the battle in this very bridge. This bridge connects Las Piñas City in Metro Manila and Bacoor in Cavite. Way back then this is the fastest route to reach Cavite other than boat.

In this bridge 2 pivotal battles was fought 1st one is with the Spaniards on 17 February 1897 in which Filipino General Edilberto Evangelista was killed. While the Filipino-American battle of Zapote Bridge was fought on February 17, 1897 between 3,000 Americans and 5,000 Filipinos. American was led by General H.W. Lawton, who was killed in San Mateo Rizal by Filipino General Licerio Geroniomo. It was the 2nd largest battle during the Philippine-American War. The original Zapote Bridge was hit during the battle, causing one half to collapse.

I would like to acknowledge the local government of Las Piñas for making it possible to create a memorial bridge to commemorate the passion and sacrifices of those Filipinos who fought for our freedom.

Today, this little bridge is open to the public and somehow forgotten by the local government to be kept neat and clean. I just can't help but shook my head in dismay that this historical monument would also be left untidy- full of rubbish which gives a very bad impression to those younger generation to at least look back of the past.
