Travel_Hinagdanan Cave

A must when you visited Bohol.

However, this is not usually included in the tours being offered since this is out of the way with other Bohol Itineraries. For Pangalao Tours, I believed they included visiting this place which is for me is a must-see.

Hinagdanan Cave is just one of the many caves Bohol offers ready for your next adventure. We went here in the morning where the sun started smiling in the deep sleepy blue skies of January 2020. We registered in the office a few steps away from the cave entrance.

Entrance Fee: Php 50.00
Bathing Fee: Php 75.00
Parking Fee: Php 15.00

After paying what is due we headed off to the cave. Surprised and not expecting that the cave was underground. We went down the small opening which caters to one individual at a time.

Why Hinagdanan? Simply because they put hagdan- Ladder to reach the area. Today, there are already stone stairs that lead to the inside of the cave. Stalactites and stalagmites were present inside the cave and what I love most inside is the pool in the middle that has crystal clear emerald green water. Per Manong Ramil, the water has an inlet from the sea thus bringing in saltwater while in the middle spring of freshwater coming underneath combined together. The water is not salty and not that cold and indeed very good for a swim.

The light coming from the top of the cave gave a dreamy fantasy effect and indeed very very nice for a photo shoot. The entire cave is an IG-worthy place. Yeah, like my heart is jumping for joy when I started to roll my eyes inside the cave looking for an angle where I could snap a photo.

By the way, you are required to have a tour guide going down the cave, and mind you these tour guides were good photographers. They exactly know where the good lighting is inside the cave. I took several pictures and let me share them with you.

A little bit of History

In the 16th century, Bingag was covered by thick vegetation. The people came to live and developed the land. One day while the owner of this land was cleaning the area for farming, he discovered two adjacent holes, noticeable only when some decayed trunks were removed. He tried to determine its depth by throwing a stone down and was surprised to hear a splash.

The present entrance was discovered later when a tree died, decayed, and was found out connected to the two original holes. Later on, a ladder was made in order for someone to get down inside without having difficulties. The ladder in the dialects is "Hagdan" so the cave came to be known as Hinagdanan Cave.

Meanwhile, the early inhabitants used this cave as a source of water for drinking, washing, and bathing.

Local Folklore of Hinagdanan Cave

In olden times, the early settlers in this place were privileged to borrow utensils from the "People" who inhabited the cave. Aside from using the water from it for drinking, washing, and bathing, they could always borrow plates, pots, gongs, and other kitchen stuff needed every time they wanted to celebrate specials occasions. But the practice has to end when a drunken man vomited on one of the borrowed gongs. Thus the behavior was not accepted when the gongs were returned and even the neighborly relation was severed, still, these "People" made their presence known every now and then to their chosen few.
