Plot and Themes:
The movie opens with Dido riding a bus back to his hometown after receiving a telegram advising him to return home to Calle Crisologo in Vigan. As he reminisces about his childhood in Vigan with Sabel, memories of playing, bathing, making music, and attending school together flood back. Candido, Sabel's neighbor and childhood sweetheart, harbors deep feelings for her, though Sabel is enamored with Raymond, a wealthy playboy.

Despite Dido's consistent displays of affection towards Sabel, she remains fixated on Raymond. Dido faithfully escorts Sabel to and from school daily, always bearing a sweet tamarind treat. They enjoy playing musical instruments together in the evenings until it's time to retire. Sabel often faces reprimands from her history teacher, Miss Crepias, for tardiness and uniform infractions.

Raymond takes notice of Sabel's financial struggles and offers to help, but she declines. Sabel captures Raymond's attention during a class presentation, sparking his interest in pursuing her. Dido's close friend Andy teases him for his hesitance in expressing his feelings to Sabel, with Dido promising to confess later.

As feelings deepen between Raymond and Sabel, Dido's unspoken affection for Sabel remains hidden, with his friend Andy encouraging him to express his emotions. As preparations for prom night ensue, Andy's accident casts a somber shadow, culminating in his untimely death due to an internal hemorrhage.

The prom night itself is marked by heartbreak for Dido, as Sabel pays him little attention, dancing with Raymond instead. Rumors of Raymond's affection for Sabel spread, compounding Dido's sorrow.

The narrative unfolds further with a confrontation between Sabel, Raymond, and Jesica at the beach, escalating into a physical altercation. Raymond's behavior at the movie theater only adds to Sabel's discomfort, prompting an emotional outpouring between her and Jesica.

Sabel's father is drawn into the conflict, facing judgment for his modest means, prompting Sabel to endure public humiliation. Amidst these turbulent events, Raymond makes advances towards Sabel, professing his love and desire to marry her.

As Raymond and Sabel exit the theater joyfully, Dido's despondency contrasts sharply with Jesica's accusations of Sabel being a flirt.

The next day, Raymond and Sabel found themselves inside the church, pouring out their hearts in confession. Raymond, determined and headstrong, insisted that they should elope that very night. After their time at the church, Sabel returned home while Raymond went off to play billiards with Dido. During their game, Raymond shared with Dido his plan to elope with Sabel that evening. Dido, though heartbroken, graciously congratulated Raymond on winning Sabel's heart.

As the evening descended, Dido was with friends in the town plaza when a passing jeepney caught his eye – inside were Raymond and Sabel. Overwhelmed with sadness, tears welled up in Dido's eyes. His friends, misunderstanding his emotions, thought he was still mourning the loss of his best friend, Andy. Feeling despondent, Dido went back home.

Meanwhile, Choleng, Sabel's mother, was incessantly nagging her husband upon his return from work, blaming Sabel's actions on Pilo. Weeks passed, and Candido found himself consumed by loneliness, often gazing longingly into Sabel's empty room. Seeking solace, he visited the shoreline, daydreaming of playing the violin while Sabel strummed her harp and danced before him.

On another front, Raymond brought Sabel home to meet his mother, Raymunda. Initially mistaken for a maid, Sabel faced Raymunda's cold reception. When asked about her parents, Sabel revealed her lineage as the daughter of Choleng and Pilo Campos. Raymunda, with a sarcastic tone, alluded to knowing about Choleng's past. Disheartened, Sabel left after witnessing Raymunda's disapproval.

Dido spotted Sabel walking in the streets and approached her, only to be ignored as she hurried away. Facing further indignity from nosy neighbors and Jesica's insults, Sabel fled home. Confronted by an enraged Choleng, Sabel fought back, revealing the truth about her parentage and the circumstances of her birth, leading to a heated confrontation that left Sabel shattered in her room.

The following morning, Dido observed Sabel talking to her friend Anita, sounding delusional about her dreams of studying in Manila. Anita left Sabel still lost in her thoughts, as Dido watched with a mix of sorrow and pity. Feeling humiliated by the laughter of nosy neighbors, Sabel ran barefoot, with Dido following close behind. Amidst the chaos, Dido confessed his love for her, but Sabel, feeling unworthy, attempted a desperate act by leaping from Banaoang Bridge.

In a moment of bravery, Dido dove in after her, saving Sabel and pledging to stand by her side. As they returned home, drenched and vulnerable, their defiance against societal norms was witnessed by the townspeople, including a cold-hearted Raymond. Despite his mother's disapproval and threats, Dido remained resolute in his love for Sabel.

Years passed, with Candido eventually returned to Calle Crisologo, where he encountered old friends and familiar faces. En route to his house, he paused to gaze at Sabel's abandoned home, haunted by memories of the past. Upon his arrival, he was met with news of his ailing mother's condition, revealing the lingering pain from their previous conflicts.

After his mother's passing, Candido set out to find Isabelita, discovering her in a humble hut preparing sweetened tamarind. As they shared a moment over Sampaloc, Sabel revealed her new life with a husband who loved her unconditionally. Despite the bittersweet reunion, Dido and Sabel professed their enduring love for each other, with Sabel choosing to follow him back to town.

As Sabel reached the town's plaza, her presence caught the attention of Jesica and Raymond. Filled with remorse, Raymond approached Jesica to request a conversation with Sabel, seeking her forgiveness for his past mistakes. However, their heartfelt moment was interrupted when Sabel's husband appeared, misinterpreting Raymond's intentions and deeming him as Sabel's lover. In a tragic turn of events, he fatally attacked Raymond, and as he turned his rage toward Sabel, he was swiftly apprehended by the vigilant policeman overseeing the area.

In the aftermath of the violence, Dido found himself at Banaoang Bridge, contemplating a departure to Manila.
Just as he was about to leave, a familiar voice called out to him, offering a taste of sweetened tamarind. Turning around, Dido saw Sabel standing there, a radiant smile on her face. Overjoyed by their unexpected reunion, Dido abandoned his plans and ran into Sabel's arms, finally finding the happiness and love he had been searching for.

The story concludes with a poignant exploration of love, betrayal, societal judgments, and personal struggles.
